1. Quali sono le vostre principali influenze musicali?

 

La musica Progressive metal anni 90’ e la musica ambient/dark ambient sono i generi che più ci appassionano e ci ispirano per comporre la nostra musica.
Gruppi come Dream Theater, Symphony x, Pain Of Salvation... (per quanto riguarda il progressive) e artisti come Julez, Repulsive, Trapeia... (per quanto riguarda la musica ambient) sono per noi un grande punto di riferimento.

2. Come descrivereste il vostro stile musicale?

Il nostro stile musicale fonde la musica progressive metal anni 90’ con un sound più moderno (quasi pop a volte), mettendo d’accordo passato e presente, con diverse sfumature ambient ed eteree. Sicuramente una musica tecnica e ispirata che lascia però spazio alla melodia e a l’emozione.

3. Come nasce una vostra canzone?

Le nostre canzoni partono quasi sempre dal testo... I nostri testi parlano spesso di emozioni o di varie situazioni nella quale ci si può trovare nel corso della propria vita, tutto da un punto di vista astratto, in modo tale che tutti si possano immedesimare o riconoscere nel testo.
Quindi una volta decisa la tematica si parte da una bozza di testo e si cerca di tradurre in musica le sensazioni che esso evoca, una volta che è pronta la base musicale si sviluppa meglio il testo e il gioco è fatto.

4. Qual è stata la canzone più difficile da scrivere e perché?

La canzone più difficile da scrivere è stata “Just A Mask” proprio perché è uno dei pochi pezzi dove è nata prima la base musicale e poi a posteriori il testo, per questo motivo c’erano tante cose che all’inizio della stesura ci lasciavano perplessi e inoltre l’assolo è stato particolarmente difficile da creare poiché ci sono numerosi cambi di metrica e quindi incastrare il tutto ha richiesto parecchio tempo, ma alla fine siamo molto soddisfatti del risultato ottenuto e “Just A Mask” è uno dei brani più apprezzati dal nostro pubblico.

5. C’è qualche genere musicale che vorreste esplorare in futuro?

Ci piace molto l’idea di evolvere il nostro sound affacciandoci a diversi generi musicali, senza però stravolgere le nostre radici di musica progressive e ambient, in particolar modo ci piacerebbe spostarci verso un metal più aggressivo (riff più serrati e d’impatto) e cercare
di mischiarlo con la musica horror moderna (che si rifà molto al dark ambient), stiamo già lavorando a qualcosa di questo tipo e siamo molto entusiasti, ma tempo al tempo.

 

ONLY ONE BLACK - Dark

 

Non ho veramente parole, anzi ne ho moltissime... Come tanti sono i pensieri che mi vengono in mente ascoltando questo brano degli "Only One Black". 

 

"Dark" è una perla di rara bellezza, un mix tra Prog e Dark/Gothic Metal, da mettere i brividi, come ascoltare i "Dream Theater" che flirtano con gli "Evanescence", o meglio, i "Lacuna Coil", visto che la band in questione è nostrana, e questo non può che riempirmi di orgoglio e gioia. 

 

Gli "Only One Black" non solo nascono in Piemonte, ma sono giovanissimi, e per quanto i miei siano gusti personali, potrebbero stare sui grandi palchi insieme ad artisti esteri più affermati, perché non hanno assolutamente nulla da invidiare. 

 

La scrittura, la melodia, la struttura, il groove, la precisione tecnica, il suono, c'è assolutamente tutto! 

E il fatto che siano così giovani è un valore aggiunto, sia per la rapidità con cui sono cresciuti musicalmente, cosa che richiede oltre a un dono innato, sicuramente un grande impegno, sia per i gusti che la band dimostra di avere e di riuscire a miscelare perfettamente. 

 

"Dark" è una dimostrazione di bravura e sentimento ineccepibile, qualcosa da ascoltare assolutamente, sia che siate fans del genere, sia perché il brano è incredibilmente radiofonico per essere così "Metal".

 

Non posso dire altro che bravissimi agli "Only One Black" e aspettare di ascoltare le loro prossime uscite, con buona pace di chi dice che in Italia c'è solo brutta musica italiana.

Siamo gli "Only One Black": un gruppo progressive metal di giovani ragazzi.

Abbiamo iniziato nel settembre del 2022 come cover band, suonando brani Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, col passare del tempo ci siamo però spostati verso la musica progressive, per la quale abbiamo sempre nutrito grande interesse e da qui nasce la voglia di scrivere brani nostri che prendessero ispirazione da questo genere musicale.

Tuttavia non tutti i componenti erano entusiasti di lavorare a del materiale inedito, così nel 2024 arrivò una nuova formazione della band con la quale si iniziò da subito a lavorare a un album.
La nostra musica è tecnica e ispirata e spesso si alternano momenti aggressivi a momenti di calma dove si toccano sonorità tratte dalla musica "ambient".

I testi trattano tematiche psicologiche ed emotive, descrivendo una situazione generica e astratta in modo tale che il lettore/ascoltatore possa immedesimarsi.

Oltre alla musica inedita non mancano mai ai nostri concerti dei nostri personali arrangiamenti di brani storici del genere, tratti da gruppi quali: Dream Theater, PFM, Rush...

1. What are your main musical influences?

1990s progressive metal and ambient/dark ambient music are the genres that inspire and excite us the most when it comes to composing. Bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation (on the progressive side), and artists like Julez, Repulsive, Trapeia (on the ambient side) are major reference points for us.

 

2. How would you describe your musical style?

Our musical style blends 90s progressive metal with a more modern sound, sometimes even bordering on pop, bridging past and present with ambient and ethereal nuances. It’s definitely a technical and inspired kind of music, but one that always leaves room for melody and emotion.

 

3. How does one of your songs come to life?

Our songs almost always start with the lyrics. We often write about emotions or situations that people may encounter throughout life, all from an abstract perspective so that anyone can relate to or recognize themselves in the text. Once the theme is chosen, we begin with a rough draft of the lyrics and try to translate the feelings it evokes into music. Once the musical base is ready, we refine the lyrics, and that’s when the song truly takes shape.

 

4. What has been the most difficult song to write, and why?

The most difficult song to write was “Just A Mask,” mainly because it’s one of the few tracks where the musical base came first and the lyrics were written afterward. That made the initial writing process a bit uncertain, and the solo was particularly challenging to create due to numerous metric changes. Fitting everything together took a lot of time, but in the end, we’re very proud of the result, and “Just A Mask” is now one of our audience’s favorite songs.

 

5. Is there a musical genre you’d like to explore in the future?

We’re very excited about evolving our sound by exploring different musical genres, while still staying true to our progressive and ambient roots. In particular, we’d love to move toward a more aggressive metal style, with tighter, more impactful riffs, and try blending it with modern horror music, which draws heavily from dark ambient. We’re already working on something along those lines and feeling very enthusiastic about it… but all in good time.

 

ONLY ONE BLACK – Dark

I’m truly speechless—or rather, I have so many words... Just as many as the thoughts that come to mind when listening to this track by "Only One Black."

"Dark" is a gem of rare beauty, a blend of Prog and Dark/Gothic Metal that gives you chills—like listening to "Dream Theater" flirting with "Evanescence," or better yet, "Lacuna Coil," considering the band is Italian, which fills me with pride and joy.

"Only One Black" not only hail from Piedmont, but they’re incredibly young. And while my tastes are personal, they could easily hold their own on major stages alongside more established international artists—they truly lack nothing.

The songwriting, the melody, the structure, the groove, the technical precision, the sound—everything is there!
And the fact that they’re so young is an added value, both for how quickly they’ve grown musically—which requires not only innate talent but also serious dedication—and for the refined taste they show in blending genres so seamlessly.

"Dark" is an impeccable display of skill and emotion, a must-listen whether you're a fan of the genre or simply because the track is incredibly radio-friendly for being so "Metal."

All I can say is: hats off to "Only One Black." I can’t wait to hear what they release next—much to the dismay of those who claim Italy only produces bad music.

We are Only One Black, a progressive metal band made up of young musicians.

We started in September 2022 as a cover band, performing Hard Rock and Heavy Metal tracks. Over time, however, we shifted toward progressive music, a genre we've always been deeply passionate about. That passion sparked our desire to write original songs inspired by this musical style.

Not all members were initially enthusiastic about working on original material, so in 2024 a new lineup was formed, and we immediately began working on an album.

Our music is technical and inspired, often alternating between aggressive passages and calm moments that draw from ambient soundscapes.

Our lyrics explore psychological and emotional themes, describing abstract and universal situations so that listeners can easily relate and immerse themselves.

In addition to our original music, our live shows always include our own arrangements of classic tracks from legendary bands such as Dream Theater, PFM, and Rush.
