Nel 1990, Jon Bon Jovi decise di prendersi una pausa dal suo gruppo per intraprendere un’avventura da solista. Il risultato fu Blaze of Glory, un album che prende il nome dalla sua traccia più iconica. Pubblicato a luglio di quell’anno, il brano fu il primo singolo estratto e divenne subito un successo planetario.
Ma ciò che molti non sanno è che "Blaze of Glory" nacque per una ragione ben precisa: doveva essere la colonna sonora del film Young Guns II (in Italia: Young Guns – Giovani pistole II), un western moderno con Emilio Estevez nel ruolo di Billy the Kid. Inizialmente, al regista era stata proposta la hit “Wanted Dead or Alive” dei Bon Jovi, ma Jon preferì scrivere qualcosa di nuovo, più adatto al tono epico e malinconico del film. Così nacque questo inno western rock che unisce chitarre ruggenti, armonica e liriche da fuorilegge romantico.
Ad aggiungere ulteriore fascino al pezzo fu la presenza di un vero fuoriclasse alla chitarra solista: Jeff Beck. La sua performance virtuosistica e intensa diede al brano un tono drammatico e potente, perfettamente in linea con l’ambientazione da Far West.
"Blaze of Glory" vinse il Golden Globe per la miglior canzone originale e ottenne nomination sia ai Grammy che agli Oscar. Una vera cavalcata verso la gloria, in stile Bon Jovi.
