Spesso scambiata per una romantica ballata d’amore, Every Breath You Take dei The Police è in realtà tutto fuorché una canzone d’amore. Scritta da Sting nel 1982, durante il difficile periodo del suo divorzio e all'inizio della relazione con Trudie Styler, il brano parla di gelosia, ossessione e controllo verso un partner perduto.
Il testo, apparentemente dolce grazie alla melodia rassicurante, descrive in realtà un narratore che monitora costantemente ogni movimento dell’altra persona: “Every breath you take, every move you make, I’ll be watching you”. Non è una promessa d’amore eterno, ma una dichiarazione inquietante di sorveglianza continua.
Sting stesso ha sempre sottolineato il lato oscuro della canzone, definendola "molto, molto sinistra e brutta". Ha raccontato con ironia come alcune coppie gliela abbiano indicata come "la loro canzone d’amore", ricevendo da lui un sarcastico “buona fortuna!”.
