È uscito il 28 agosto 2026 “My Angels Are Calling”, nuovo singolo di Steve Cropper & The Midnight Hour con la partecipazione di Brian May dei Queen e Billy F. Gibbons degli ZZ Top. La traccia è contenuta in Watching The Tide, l’album postumo di Steve Cropper pubblicato nella stessa giornata da Provogue / Artone Label Group.
Considerato uno dei grandi architetti della musica soul, rhythm & blues e rock americana, Steve Cropper ha scritto alcune pagine fondamentali della storia della musica. Chitarrista, autore e produttore, è stato una figura centrale della leggendaria etichetta Stax Records e membro di Booker T. & the M.G.'s. Tra le sue collaborazioni più celebri figura quella con Otis Redding, con il quale firmò “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay”, uno dei brani più importanti della storia del soul. Cropper è scomparso nel dicembre 2025, all’età di 84 anni.
“My Angels Are Calling” nasce proprio da una sessione alla quale Cropper aveva lavorato insieme al produttore e autore Jon Tiven. Dopo la morte del musicista, Brian May ha deciso di trasformare il brano in un tributo personale, scrivendone il testo e interpretandolo alla voce. L’idea è quella di immaginare Cropper mentre ripercorre la propria vita e il proprio viaggio musicale, accompagnato dalla consapevolezza che gli angeli lo stanno chiamando verso casa.

Widely regarded as one of the great architects of American soul, rhythm & blues and rock, Steve Cropper wrote some of the most important chapters in music history. A guitarist, songwriter and producer, he was a central figure at the legendary Stax Records and a member of Booker T. & the M.G.’s. Among his most celebrated collaborations is his work with Otis Redding, with whom he co‑wrote “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay”, one of the defining songs in the history of soul. Cropper passed away in December 2025 at the age of 84.
My Angels Are Calling was born from a session Cropper had worked on with producer and songwriter Jon Tiven. After Cropper’s death, Brian May decided to turn the track into a personal tribute, writing the lyrics and performing the vocal part. His idea was to imagine Cropper reflecting on his life and musical journey, aware that the angels are calling him home.
