I Down tornano finalmente con nuova musica e lo fanno con un annuncio particolarmente atteso dalla scena heavy internazionale. La superband di New Orleans ha presentato “Volume V”, il nuovo album in studio, e ha pubblicato contemporaneamente “Blood Oath”, il primo singolo estratto dal disco, accompagnato dal relativo videoclip ufficiale. Il singolo è disponibile dal 19 agosto 2026, mentre “Volume V” arriverà il 20 novembre 2026 su Nuclear Blast Records.
Per i Down si tratta di un ritorno di enorme importanza: “Volume V” sarà infatti il loro primo album completo di inediti dal 2007, anno di pubblicazione di “Down III – Over the Under”, e rappresenta il primo full-length della band dopo quasi vent’anni. L’ultimo capitolo discografico risaliva invece al 2014, quando il gruppo aveva pubblicato l’EP “Down IV – Part II”.
Nati a New Orleans nei primi anni Novanta, i Down hanno costruito una delle identità più riconoscibili e influenti dell’heavy metal americano, fondendo sludge metal, doom, southern rock, blues e hard rock in un sound pesante, rallentato e profondamente legato alla tradizione musicale della Louisiana. La band è guidata dal cantante Philip H. Anselmo, celebre anche per la sua lunga esperienza con i Pantera, e comprende musicisti provenienti da alcune delle realtà più importanti della scena metal statunitense: Pepper Keenan alla chitarra, membro dei Corrosion of Conformity, Kirk Windstein alla chitarra, storico componente dei Crowbar, Jimmy Bower alla batteria e Pat Bruders al basso.
Il progetto Down nacque dall'incontro tra musicisti legati alla scena underground di New Orleans e dintorni e si trasformò rapidamente in qualcosa di molto più grande. Il debutto discografico, “NOLA”, pubblicato nel 1995, è diventato negli anni un autentico punto di riferimento per lo sludge metal e per il metal americano degli anni Novanta. Il disco combinava riff monumentali, atmosfere cupe, influenze blues e southern rock e una produzione volutamente ruvida, contribuendo a definire un linguaggio musicale che avrebbe influenzato numerose band negli anni successivi.
Dopo il successo di “NOLA”, la storia dei Down è stata caratterizzata da lunghi intervalli tra un album e l’altro, cambi di formazione e numerosi progetti paralleli dei singoli componenti. Nonostante questo, la band ha mantenuto nel tempo un seguito internazionale estremamente fedele, proprio grazie alla forza di un catalogo relativamente contenuto ma diventato fondamentale per l’evoluzione dell’heavy rock americano.
“Blood Oath” rappresenta quindi il primo vero assaggio di questa nuova fase. Il brano conserva gli elementi fondamentali del DNA dei Down: riff pesanti e profondi, una forte componente groove, atmosfere southern e un ritornello immediatamente riconoscibile, ma introduce anche una certa freschezza nella scrittura. Secondo Philip Anselmo, il pezzo contiene numerosi riferimenti alla città di New Orleans, elemento particolarmente importante per una band che ha sempre considerato la propria città d’origine parte integrante della propria identità artistica.
Il nuovo album sarà composto da dieci brani e comprenderà anche alcune collaborazioni particolarmente interessanti. Tra queste spicca “Merciful Fate”, che vedrà la partecipazione di King Diamond, mentre nella tracklist compare anche “Ozz”, brano che rende omaggio all’influenza di Ozzy Osbourne sulla formazione e sulla musica di Anselmo. A chiudere il disco sarà “Twice-Told Tales”, una composizione descritta come un incontro tra riff serrati, blues rock e metal classico.
La realizzazione di “Volume V” ha visto la band lavorare alla produzione insieme a Eddie Mapp, mentre il missaggio è stato affidato a Dave Fortman, già noto per il suo lavoro con artisti come Slipknot e Mudvayne. Il mastering è stato invece curato da Maor Appelbaum, professionista che ha collaborato con numerosi nomi di primo piano del rock e del metal internazionale.
La pubblicazione di “Blood Oath” arriva dunque come un momento particolarmente significativo per i fan dei Down e per l’intera scena heavy. Dopo anni di attesa, la band torna infatti con un nuovo capitolo discografico che promette di recuperare gli elementi più autentici del proprio sound senza limitarsi a ripetere il passato.

The Down are finally back with new music, delivering one of the most anticipated announcements in the international heavy scene. The New Orleans supergroup has unveiled “Volume V”, their new studio album, and simultaneously released “Blood Oath”, the first single taken from the record, accompanied by its official music video. The single has been available since 19 August 2026, while “Volume V” will arrive on 20 November 2026 via Nuclear Blast Records.
For Down, this marks an enormously significant return: “Volume V” will be their first full album of new material since 2007, the year they released “Down III – Over the Under”, and represents their first full‑length in nearly twenty years. Their most recent release dates back to 2014, when the band issued the EP “Down IV – Part II”.
Formed in New Orleans in the early 1990s, Down have built one of the most recognisable and influential identities in American heavy metal, blending sludge metal, doom, southern rock, blues and hard rock into a heavy, slow‑burning sound deeply rooted in Louisiana’s musical tradition. The band is led by vocalist Philip H. According to Philip Anselmo, the song contains numerous references to the city of New Orleans — a particularly important element for a band that has always considered its hometown an integral part of its artistic identity.
The new album will feature ten tracks and include some particularly notable collaborations.
