SMASHING PUMPKINS AND BUTCH VIG: NEW SINGLE COMING SOON
The Smashing Pumpkins have reunited with Butch Vig for “Black Stars,” the American band’s new single, recorded for the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The track was released on October 16, 2026, and is accompanied by an official music video.
The release marks a significant artistic reunion: Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin have returned to the studio with Vig more than thirty years after their collaboration on Siamese Dream, the 1993 album that helped establish the group as one of the most influential acts in alternative rock during the 1990s. The producer had previously worked with the band on their debut album, Gish, released in 1991.
The origins of “Black Stars” can be traced back to a project that initially took a different direction. Billy Corgan was working on material for a potential solo album when the opportunity arose to write an original song for the latest installment in the Hunger Games film franchise. The idea subsequently evolved into a Smashing Pumpkins project, with Butch Vig involved in identifying and developing the composition best suited to the film’s atmosphere.
Recording sessions took place at Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, with additional sessions in Chicago, the band’s hometown. The track features on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (The Album), the official soundtrack due out on November 13, 2026, via MCA. The film itself is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20.
The new single brings renewed attention to a collaboration that has left a lasting mark on the band’s history. Vig, who is also known for his work with Nirvana and for producing Nevermind, represents a significant link to the era when alternative rock reached an international audience.
Featuring “Black Stars” in a major film production also expands the band’s creative reach, placing their distinctive musical identity in the service of a story set in the dystopian world of Panem. The soundtrack is poised to accompany the film’s release, bringing together a diverse range of artists and musical styles.
With “Black Stars,” the Smashing Pumpkins reconnect with a pivotal chapter in their musical history without simply looking back. Their collaboration with Butch Vig opens a new chapter for a band that continues to preserve its identity within the international alternative rock scene.
