Johnny Marr, Beyond The Smiths
For many, he will always be the guitarist of The Smiths, the man behind some of the most recognizable guitar lines in British music of the 1980s. But Johnny Marr’s artistic story did not end with the breakup of the band. Nearly four decades after the conclusion of his partnership with Morrissey, Marr continues to shape a musical identity of his own, reaching one of the most mature chapters of his career with The Age Of Everything, his fifth solo album, released on October 2, 2026.
The new record follows The Messenger, Playland, Call The Comet and Fever Dreams Pts 1-4, confirming that Marr’s journey has long expanded beyond the monumental legacy of The Smiths. Across ten tracks, the guitarist retains his unmistakable melodic gift while placing it within a sound that is energetic, uplifting and distinctly contemporary. The material was written in London and recorded in Manchester, with some of the songs tested live before entering the studio, a decision that helped give the album an especially immediate and physical feel.
The title, The Age Of Everything, stems from the sensation of living in an era dominated by an overload of information, technology and constant stimulation. Marr, however, does not view this condition solely through a negative lens. Instead, the album also seeks a sense of possibility, transforming that feeling of overload into creative energy. It is an approach that runs throughout the record and emerges particularly strongly in tracks such as “Spin”, “It’s Time” and “Fire With Fire”.
Musically, Marr appears determined to reaffirm what has always set him apart: the ability to turn the guitar into a melodic, rhythmic and narrative instrument. The result draws from the traditions of British indie and post-punk while embracing more modern influences. During the album’s creation, Marr cited artists such as Fontaines D.C., Boards of Canada and Gorillaz among his key listening references, alongside the ever-present influence of The Cure and Depeche Mode.
And the relationship with the past is one of the most fascinating aspects of this new phase of Marr’s career. The former Smiths guitarist does not reject what came before, but neither does he seem interested in living solely on nostalgia. Throughout his solo career, he has continued to collaborate with a wide range of artists and, more recently, worked with Gorillaz on The Mountain, further demonstrating a musical curiosity that extends far beyond the boundaries of British indie rock.
His approach to songwriting has evolved as well. Marr has explained that much of the new material was inspired by observing people and everyday life in London, transforming the perceptions, emotions and contradictions of contemporary society into songs. The result is an album where pop energy coexists with reflections on technology, consumerism, fear, disillusionment and collective responsibility.
In this sense, The Age Of Everything is not simply another album release, but a further confirmation of the artistic independence Johnny Marr has achieved. The Smiths inevitably remain the starting point of his legend, but they are no longer the final destination. Decades later, Marr continues to prove that behind one of the most influential guitarists in the history of British indie music stands an artist still capable of looking forward, experimenting and, above all, creating new music without relying exclusively on his past.
Today, Johnny Marr no longer needs to distance himself from The Smiths to show who he is.
All you have to do is listen to who he has become.
