Un incontro tra grandi protagonisti del rock contemporaneo e uno dei brani più iconici della storia del classic rock. Gli Europe hanno unito la propria potenza sonora alla voce di Jay Buchanan, frontman dei Rival Sons, per una nuova interpretazione di “Carry On Wayward Son”, storico capolavoro dei Kansas.
La performance è andata in scena il 18 settembre, durante la prima puntata della nuova stagione di På Spåret, popolare programma televisivo svedese trasmesso da SVT. Gli Europe sono stati scelti come house band della trasmissione e, anziché proporre un normale concerto, hanno accompagnato diversi ospiti musicali nel corso della serata.
Tra questi c'era proprio Jay Buchanan, chiamato a confrontarsi con uno dei brani simbolo del rock americano degli anni Settanta. Il risultato è una rilettura che mette insieme il carattere hard rock degli Europe e l'inconfondibile impronta vocale di Buchanan, regalando nuova energia a una composizione entrata da tempo nell'immaginario collettivo del rock.
“Carry On Wayward Son” fu pubblicata dai Kansas nel 1976 all'interno dell'album Leftoverture. Scritta dal chitarrista Kerry Livgren, la canzone rappresentò il primo grande successo della band statunitense e raggiunse la 11ª posizione della Billboard Hot 100 nel 1977. Nel corso dei decenni è diventata uno dei brani più riconoscibili del repertorio classic rock, mantenendo una presenza costante nelle radio e nelle scalette live.
La scelta del brano acquista ulteriore interesse anche per il momento particolarmente intenso attraversato dagli Europe. La band svedese si prepara infatti alla pubblicazione del nuovo album “Come This Madness”, prevista per il 25 settembre 2026. Il disco vede la partecipazione speciale di Tobias Forge dei Ghost e Mikael Åkerfeldt degli Opeth, con la produzione di Tom Dalgety e il mixaggio affidato a Mike Fraser, tecnico del suono che ha lavorato, tra gli altri, con AC/DC e Metallica.
E non è tutto. Dopo l'uscita dell'album, gli Europe saranno impegnati in una nuova serie di concerti, compreso il tour celebrativo per i 40 anni di “The Final Countdown”, con partenza fissata a Glasgow il 30 settembre.
L'incontro con Jay Buchanan dimostra ancora una volta quanto il grande repertorio rock possa acquistare nuova vita quando viene reinterpretato da artisti provenienti da generazioni e realtà musicali differenti. Questa volta, il ponte tra passato e presente passa attraverso una canzone che, a cinquant'anni dalla sua nascita, continua a ruggire forte.

EUROPE & JAY BUCHANAN: “CARRY ON WAYWARD SON” STILL ROARS
A meeting between major figures of contemporary rock and one of the most iconic songs in classic rock history. Europe joined forces with Jay Buchanan, frontman of Rival Sons, for a new interpretation of “Carry On Wayward Son”, the legendary masterpiece by Kansas.
The performance took place on September 18 during the season premiere of På Spåret, a popular Swedish TV show broadcast by SVT. Europe were chosen as the show’s house band and, instead of delivering a standard concert, accompanied various musical guests throughout the evening.
Among them was Jay Buchanan, invited to take on one of the defining songs of American ’70s rock. The result is a reinterpretation that blends Europe’s hard‑rock character with Buchanan’s unmistakable vocal presence, injecting new energy into a composition that has long been part of rock’s collective imagination.
“Carry On Wayward Son” was released by Kansas in 1976 on the album Leftoverture. Written by guitarist Kerry Livgren, the song became the band’s first major hit, reaching No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. Over the decades, it has become one of the most recognizable staples of classic rock, maintaining a constant presence on radio and in live setlists.
The choice of the song is even more interesting given the intense moment Europe are currently experiencing. The Swedish band is preparing to release their new album “Come This Madness”, scheduled for September 25, 2026. The record features special contributions from Tobias Forge of Ghost and Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth, with production by Tom Dalgety and mixing by Mike Fraser, a sound engineer who has worked with AC/DC and Metallica.
And there’s more. After the album’s release, Europe will embark on a new series of concerts, including the tour celebrating 40 years of “The Final Countdown”, kicking off in Glasgow on September 30.
