Formati a Helsinki nel 1979 attorno al cantante e polistrumentista Michael Monroe, gli Hanoi Rocks hanno costruito negli anni successivi un'identità capace di unire glam rock, punk e hard rock, distinguendosi per l'energia delle esibizioni dal vivo, l'immagine estremamente riconoscibile e un sound che avrebbe lasciato un segno importante nella scena rock internazionale.
The Complete Collection 1981-1984 ripercorre proprio questo periodo attraverso i principali album della formazione originale: Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks (1981), Oriental Beat nella versione The RE(AL)MIX del 2022, Self Destruction Blues (1982), Back To Mystery City (1983) e Two Steps From The Move (1984).
A rendere il progetto particolarmente interessante è il sesto disco, intitolato Motorvatin'!!!, dedicato a rarità e materiale inedito. La raccolta comprende, tra gli altri contenuti, registrazioni delle sessioni BBC, versioni alternative e demo mai pubblicati in precedenza. Tra i brani presenti figurano “Underwater World” e “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” in versione BBC, oltre a demo come “The Beating Gets Faster (I Know You)”, “Sailing Down The Tears” e “Rebels On The Run”.
Il box set non punta quindi soltanto a celebrare la discografia degli Hanoi Rocks, ma offre anche materiale utile per riscoprire il percorso creativo della band e il suo lato più raro e meno conosciuto. Le edizioni fisiche comprenderanno inoltre un photobook di 36 pagine con fotografie rare e inedite e card dedicate agli album della prima fase della carriera.
Quella degli Hanoi Rocks è una storia strettamente legata alla grande stagione del rock degli anni Ottanta. Dopo aver sviluppato un seguito internazionale, la band sembrava pronta a compiere il definitivo salto di livello con Two Steps From The Move, pubblicato nel 1984. Il percorso fu però drammaticamente interrotto dalla morte del batterista Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley, avvenuta durante il tour americano, e dalla successiva separazione della formazione nel 1985.
L'influenza degli Hanoi Rocks sarebbe comunque rimasta evidente negli anni successivi, soprattutto nella scena glam e hard rock americana. Il loro stile e la loro attitudine contribuirono a lasciare un'impronta su una generazione di musicisti e band, mentre il gruppo avrebbe continuato a essere riscoperto anche dopo la fine della formazione originale.

Hanoi Rocks return to the spotlight with The Complete Collection 1981–1984, an ambitious new box set that gathers the most crucial phase of the early career of the legendary Finnish band. The collection will be released on 13 November 2026 and will be available in 6‑LP and 6‑CD formats via BMG.
Formed in Helsinki in 1979 around singer and multi‑instrumentalist Michael Monroe, Hanoi Rocks spent the following years shaping an identity that blended glam rock, punk and hard rock — distinguished by explosive live performances, a striking visual style and a sound that would leave a lasting mark on the international rock scene.
The Complete Collection 1981–1984 retraces exactly this era through the key albums of the original lineup: Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks (1981), Oriental Beat in its 2022 The RE(AL)MIX version, Self Destruction Blues (1982), Back To Mystery City (1983) and Two Steps From The Move (1984).
What makes the project particularly compelling is the sixth disc, titled Motorvatin’!!!, dedicated to rarities and previously unreleased material. The collection includes BBC session recordings, alternate versions and never‑before‑released demos.
