Dopo circa 60 anni trascorsi sui palchi e negli studi di registrazione, Chris Slade ha annunciato il ritiro dalla batteria. Il musicista gallese, protagonista di alcune delle pagine più importanti del rock internazionale, ha comunicato la decisione il 22 agosto, chiudendo così una carriera iniziata quando era ancora adolescente e sviluppatasi al fianco di artisti e band di primo piano.
Nato nel 1946, Slade ha costruito il proprio percorso sulla versatilità e su uno stile potente e preciso. I suoi primi importanti passi arrivarono con Tom Jones, prima dell'ingresso nella Manfred Mann's Earth Band, con cui negli anni Settanta partecipò alla realizzazione di brani come “Blinded by the Light” e “Davy's on the Road Again”. Da quel momento il suo nome avrebbe iniziato a comparire accanto a musicisti appartenenti a mondi diversi del rock.
Nel corso degli anni Slade ha infatti lavorato con artisti come Gary Moore, Uriah Heep, David Gilmour e Asia. Nel 1985 entrò inoltre nei The Firm, supergruppo formato da Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers e Tony Franklin, confermando la sua capacità di inserirsi in formazioni di altissimo livello e di adattare il proprio drumming a sonorità differenti.
Il capitolo più celebre rimane quello con gli AC/DC. Slade entrò nella band nel 1989, sostituendo Simon Wright, e suonò nell'album “The Razors Edge”, pubblicato nel 1990 e diventato uno dei dischi simbolo della formazione australiana, grazie anche a classici come “Thunderstruck” e “Are You Ready”. Rimase con gli AC/DC fino al 1994 e tornò poi nella band nel 2015, quando sostituì nuovamente Phil Rudd durante il “Rock or Bust World Tour”.
Anche dopo le esperienze con le grandi band, Slade ha continuato a mantenere un rapporto costante con il pubblico attraverso il progetto The Chris Slade Timeline, dedicato a ripercorrere dal vivo le diverse tappe della sua lunghissima carriera.
Il ritiro rappresenta quindi la conclusione di un viaggio musicale fuori dal comune, costruito attraverso generazioni, stili e protagonisti differenti.
