Nel giorno del suo 65° compleanno, Dave Mustaine torna al centro dell’attenzione con una dichiarazione destinata a far discutere gli appassionati di thrash metal. In una recente intervista all’emittente ceca Óčko, il frontman dei Megadeth ha immaginato quale potrebbe essere un nuovo “Big Four” del genere, indicando Testament, Overkill, Exodus e, con qualche riserva, Trivium.
Mustaine ha precisato che non si tratta propriamente di una nuova generazione, considerando la lunga storia delle band citate. La scelta di Testament, Overkill ed Exodus appare infatti legata soprattutto alla loro importanza storica e alla continuità dimostrata nel corso dei decenni. Qualche dubbio, invece, riguarda i Trivium, che non sono una formazione esclusivamente thrash metal, ma hanno incorporato nel proprio sound numerose influenze provenienti dal genere.
Parlando delle singole band, Mustaine ha espresso particolare rispetto per gli Overkill, protagonisti storici della scena della East Coast, e per gli Exodus, ricordando anche il rapporto di amicizia con il chitarrista Gary Holt. Sui Testament, invece, ha sottolineato il valore di Eric Peterson e Alex Skolnick, due chitarristi che considera tra i più importanti della scena.
Il concetto di “Big Four” nasce dal quartetto formato da Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer e Anthrax, le quattro band che hanno avuto un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo e nella diffusione internazionale del thrash metal. Le formazioni si esibirono insieme per la prima volta nel 2010 durante il Sonisphere Festival di Varsavia, dando vita a uno degli eventi più celebri nella storia del metal.
Le tre band storiche indicate da Mustaine hanno tutte un peso significativo nell’evoluzione del genere. Gli Exodus sono strettamente legati alla nascita della scena thrash della Bay Area e al fondamentale Bonded by Blood del 1985; gli Overkill hanno rappresentato per decenni uno dei punti di riferimento della scena newyorkese, mentre i Testament sono diventati una delle formazioni più autorevoli della seconda grande ondata del thrash americano.
La scelta di Mustaine assume un significato particolare anche per il suo ruolo nella storia del genere. Prima di fondare i Megadeth nel 1983, il musicista aveva fatto parte dei Metallica, contribuendo alla prima fase della band. Con i Megadeth avrebbe poi costruito una delle discografie più importanti del thrash, caratterizzata da riff complessi, velocità, tecnica chitarristica e una forte identità compositiva.
Il “nuovo Big Four” indicato da Mustaine non rappresenta quindi una formazione ufficiale né una successione riconosciuta al quartetto originale, ma la personale fotografia di uno dei protagonisti assoluti del thrash metal. Testament, Overkill ed Exodus sembrano essere le sue candidature più solide, mentre l’inserimento dei Trivium lascia aperto il dibattito. E proprio questa possibilità riaccende una domanda destinata a dividere ancora una volta i fan: quali sono davvero le quattro band che meritano di rappresentare il futuro del thrash metal?

Dave Mustaine svela il “nuovo Big Four” del thrash metal
On the day of his 65th birthday, Dave Mustaine returns to the spotlight with a statement destined to spark debate among thrash metal fans. In a recent interview with Czech broadcaster Óčko, the Megadeth frontman imagined what a new “Big Four” of the genre might look like, naming Testament, Overkill, Exodus and, with some reservations, Trivium.
Mustaine clarified that this is not exactly a “new generation,” considering the long history of the bands he mentioned. The choice of Testament, Overkill and Exodus seems tied above all to their historical importance and the consistency they have shown over the decades. Some doubts, however, concern Trivium, who are not strictly a thrash metal band, having incorporated numerous influences from the genre into their sound.
Speaking about each band, Mustaine expressed particular respect for Overkill, historic protagonists of the East Coast scene, and for Exodus, also recalling his friendship with guitarist Gary Holt. Regarding Testament, he highlighted the value of Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick, two guitarists he considers among the most important in the scene.
The concept of the “Big Four” originates from the quartet formed by Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax — the four bands that played a fundamental role in the development and international spread of thrash metal. With Megadeth, he went on to build one of the most important discographies in thrash metal, characterized by complex riffs, speed, technical guitar work and a strong compositional identity.
The “new Big Four” suggested by Mustaine is therefore not an official formation nor a recognized succession to the original quartet, but rather the personal snapshot of one of thrash metal’s key figures. Testament, Overkill and Exodus appear to be his most solid candidates, while the inclusion of Trivium keeps the debate open. And it is precisely this possibility that reignites a question destined to divide fans once again: which four bands truly deserve to represent the future of thrash metal?
