Una delle band simbolo del grunge di Seattle torna sul palco. I Soundgarden hanno annunciato una nuova esibizione dal vivo che vedrà riuniti Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd e Matt Cameron, affiancati da due ospiti speciali: Taylor Momsen, voce dei The Pretty Reckless, e Mike McCready, chitarrista dei Pearl Jam.
L'appuntamento è fissato per mercoledì 9 settembre 2026 al Lumen Field di Seattle, durante l'intervallo della partita inaugurale della stagione NFL dei Seattle Seahawks contro i New England Patriots. McCready sarà inoltre protagonista della serata eseguendo l'inno nazionale statunitense prima del match.
Nati a Seattle nel 1984, i Soundgarden sono stati tra i gruppi fondamentali nella nascita e nell'affermazione del movimento grunge. Guidati dalla voce inconfondibile di Chris Cornell, insieme a Thayil, Shepherd e Cameron hanno sviluppato un sound che univa hard rock, heavy metal, psichedelia e punk. Album come Badmotorfinger e soprattutto Superunknown, pubblicato nel 1994, hanno consacrato la band a livello internazionale grazie a brani come Black Hole Sun, Spoonman e Fell on Black Days.
La morte di Chris Cornell, nel 2017, ha segnato profondamente la storia del gruppo. Da allora i tre membri superstiti hanno mantenuto vivo il repertorio dei Soundgarden attraverso occasioni speciali, senza però intraprendere una vera attività live continuativa.
Taylor Momsen rappresenta oggi uno dei legami più importanti tra il passato e il presente della band. La cantante aveva già condiviso il palco con i Soundgarden durante la cerimonia della Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2025, insieme a Mike McCready, eseguendo Rusty Cage. Momsen ha inoltre più volte sottolineato la propria ammirazione per Chris Cornell e per la musica dei Soundgarden.
Anche la presenza di Mike McCready ha un forte valore simbolico. Il chitarrista dei Pearl Jam appartiene alla stessa scena musicale di Seattle che, tra la fine degli anni Ottanta e l'inizio dei Novanta, avrebbe portato il grunge alla ribalta mondiale.
Il nuovo appuntamento potrebbe inoltre rappresentare un'anticipazione importante per i fan. I Soundgarden stanno infatti lavorando al materiale inedito registrato con Chris Cornell prima della sua scomparsa, con l'obiettivo di completare un album costruito attorno alle sue parti vocali.

Soundgarden, The Comeback Is Official: Taylor Momsen and Mike McCready Take the Stage
Soundgarden, one of the defining bands of the Seattle grunge movement, are returning to the stage. The group has announced a new live performance that will reunite Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron, joined by two special guests: Taylor Momsen, vocalist of The Pretty Reckless, and Mike McCready, guitarist of Pearl Jam.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday, 9 September 2026 at Seattle’s Lumen Field, during halftime of the NFL season opener between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. McCready will also take part earlier in the evening, performing the U.S. national anthem before kickoff.
Formed in Seattle in 1984, Soundgarden were instrumental in the birth and rise of the grunge movement. Led by the unmistakable voice of Chris Cornell, Thayil, Shepherd and Cameron developed a sound that blended hard rock, heavy metal, psychedelia and punk. Albums like Badmotorfinger and especially Superunknown (1994) cemented the band’s international status thanks to tracks such as Black Hole Sun, Spoonman and Fell on Black Days.
Chris Cornell’s death in 2017 profoundly marked the band’s history. Since then, the three surviving members have kept Soundgarden’s legacy alive through special appearances, without embarking on a continuous touring schedule.
Taylor Momsen now represents one of the most meaningful bridges between the band’s past and present. She previously shared the stage with Soundgarden during the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, performing Rusty Cage alongside Mike McCready. Momsen has repeatedly expressed her admiration for Cornell and for Soundgarden’s music.
McCready’s presence also carries strong symbolic weight. The Pearl Jam guitarist is part of the same Seattle music scene that, between the late 1980s and early 1990s, propelled grunge onto the global stage.
The new performance may also serve as an important preview for fans. Soundgarden are currently working on unreleased material recorded with Chris Cornell before his passing, with the goal of completing an album built around his vocal tracks.
On 9 September, Seattle will once again hear the sound of one of the most influential bands in rock history. With Taylor Momsen on vocals and Mike McCready on guitar, Soundgarden’s return promises to be far more than a simple performance — it will be a powerful new chapter in their story.
