Clamorosa svolta per gli MTV Video Music Awards 2026: dopo 37 anni, il rock non avrà più una categoria dedicata al Best Rock. Il riconoscimento, presente nel programma dei VMA dal 1989, è stato escluso dall'edizione di quest'anno, lasciando il genere senza un premio specifico nella serata che celebra ogni anno i migliori artisti e videoclip della scena musicale internazionale. La notizia è emersa con la pubblicazione delle nomination ufficiali per l'edizione 2026.
La storia della categoria è particolarmente importante. Il premio debuttò nel 1989 con il nome di Best Heavy Metal Video, in un periodo nel quale il rock e soprattutto l'heavy metal avevano un ruolo centrale nell'immaginario di MTV. Dal 1990 al 1995 diventò Best Metal/Hard Rock Video, nel 1996 fu ribattezzato Best Hard Rock Video, mentre dal 1997 assunse la denominazione Best Rock Video. Nel 2017, con una nuova riorganizzazione delle categorie, la parola "Video" venne eliminata e rimase semplicemente Best Rock.
Nel corso degli anni, il premio ha accompagnato alcune delle band e degli artisti più importanti della storia del rock. Tra i vincitori figurano nomi come Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, Metallica, Green Day, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Limp Bizkit, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Muse e molti altri. A major shake‑up has hit the MTV Video Music Awards 2026: after 37 years, rock will no longer have its own dedicated Best Rock category. The award, present in the VMA lineup since 1989, has been removed from this year’s edition, leaving the genre without a specific recognition in the ceremony that annually celebrates the top artists and music videos on the global scene. The news emerged with the publication of the official 2026 nominations.
The history of the category is particularly significant. The award debuted in 1989 as Best Heavy Metal Video, during a period when rock — and especially heavy metal — played a central role in MTV’s identity. From 1990 to 1995 it became Best Metal/Hard Rock Video, in 1996 it was renamed Best Hard Rock Video, and from 1997 it took on the name Best Rock Video.
