Il 6 novembre 2025, il Live Club di Trezzo sull’Adda (MI) ospiterà un evento che promette di lasciare un segno profondo nella scena metal italiana: gli AS I LAY DYING tornano nel nostro Paese per un’unica data nazionale, in occasione del tour celebrativo per i vent’anni di Shadows Are Security, uno degli album più influenti del metalcore statunitense. La serata, intitolata An Evening with AS I LAY DYING, vedrà la band esibirsi in due set distinti: il primo dedicato all’esecuzione integrale del disco del 2005, il secondo riservato a brani nuovi e ai grandi classici che hanno segnato la loro carriera.
Formatisi nel 2000 a San Diego, California, gli AS I LAY DYING sono stati tra i pionieri del metalcore, un genere che fonde la brutalità del death metal con la melodia dell’hardcore. Il gruppo è stato fondato dal cantante Tim Lambesis, figura centrale e controversa, che ha guidato la band attraverso successi internazionali, crisi interne e rinascite artistiche. Il nome della band è ispirato al romanzo As I Lay Dying di William Faulkner, ma i testi e la musica del gruppo non sono direttamente collegati all’opera letteraria.
Il debutto discografico avviene nel 2001 con Beneath the Encasing of Ashes, seguito da Frail Words Collapse nel 2003, che li proietta sulla scena internazionale. Il vero punto di svolta arriva nel 2005 con Shadows Are Security, album che consolida il loro stile e li consacra tra i nomi di riferimento del genere. Da lì in avanti, la band pubblica una serie di lavori acclamati, tra cui An Ocean Between Us (2007), The Powerless Rise (2010), Awakened (2012), Shaped by Fire (2019) e Through Storms Ahead (2024).
La carriera degli AS I LAY DYING è stata tutt’altro che lineare. Nel 2013, Lambesis viene arrestato per aver tentato di commissionare l’omicidio della sua ex moglie, evento che porta alla temporanea dissoluzione della band. I membri superstiti formano i Wovenwar, mentre Lambesis sconta sei anni di carcere. Dopo la sua scarcerazione, nel 2018, la band si riunisce con la formazione originale, pubblicando il singolo My Own Grave e intraprendendo un nuovo tour.
Tuttavia, la stabilità è di breve durata. Tra il 2022 e il 2024, la formazione subisce numerosi cambiamenti: lasciano prima Nick Hipa, poi Josh Gilbert e Jordan Mancino, seguiti da Ryan Neff, Ken Susi, Nick Pierce e infine Phil Sgrosso. A oggi, Tim Lambesis è l’unico membro rimasto, ma ha dichiarato di voler continuare il progetto con nuovi collaboratori.
Il ritorno in Italia rappresenta non solo un’occasione per riascoltare dal vivo Shadows Are Security, ma anche per assistere alla nuova fase creativa della band. Il disco del 2005, con brani come Confined, The Darkest Nights e Through Struggle, ha definito un’epoca e influenzato generazioni di musicisti. La scelta di riproporlo integralmente è un tributo ai fan e alla storia del gruppo.

On November 6, 2025, the Live Club in Trezzo sull’Adda (MI) will host an event set to leave a lasting mark on the Italian metal scene: AS I LAY DYING return to the country for their only Italian date, as part of the 20th anniversary tour for Shadows Are Security, one of the most influential albums in U.S. metalcore. The evening, titled An Evening with AS I LAY DYING, will feature the band performing two separate sets: the first dedicated to playing the 2005 album in its entirety, and the second featuring new songs along with the classic tracks that have defined their career.

Between 2022 and 2024, the lineup went through numerous changes: first Nick Hipa left, followed by Josh Gilbert and Jordan Mancino, then Ryan Neff, Ken Susi, Nick Pierce, and finally Phil Sgrosso. Today, Tim Lambesis remains the sole member, but he has stated his intention to continue the project with new collaborators.
